Sennheiser helps Carrack celebrate birthday in style
01.08.2001
Of the many possible ways to celebrate coming of a certain age, Paul Carrack chose to mark his 50th by filling the Royal Albert Hall with a few thousand fans, and taking to the stage with his band and some familiar guest stars come mates. Headline sponsors for the event in the capital’s most prestigious venue, was Sennheiser UK, for who Carrack is an official endorsee.

Given a career that has included performing with, or writing for, artists as diverse as Frankie Miller, Roxy Music, John Hiatt, Nick Lowe, Elton John, Van Morrison, Squeeze, Mike and the Mechanics and The Eagles, there was no shortage of familiar names and faces to turn up and duet with the man, or perform equally familiar songs with his band.

First up to guest was Rod Argent whose keyboard skills were as virtuosic as ever, who was closely followed by Nick Lowe, BA Robertson and Barry McGuigan (in perfect pitch). An extended set of Squeeze classics with Difford and Tilbrook was followed by an equally well known set of hits from Mike and the Mechanics as Mike Rutherford took to the stage with Carrack and the band.

Microphones, RF and In-ears for the event were, as usual, provided by Sennheiser evolution, including evolution 500 series radio microphones and evolution 300 series IEM, Sennheiser MKH40 condensers, on overheads and hi-hats, evolution e604's on snare and toms, e608 on alto sax and e855 wired mics for backing vocals.

”I've always liked Sennheiser equipment,” said Paul, ”The evolution microphones are superb; very clear, good presence and plenty of nice warm tone. Sennheiser has worked very closely with us and I'm exceptionally pleased with the support we've been given.”

In addition to the primary sound reinforcement system, tried and tested many times in the Albert Hall, that evening saw the introduction of DAS Audio products to the venue, with four ST-15 cabinets providing side and front fills for the stalls, to augment the main centrally flown cluster.

Carrack’s career spans numerous hits, collaborations and several albums, including six in his own name, beginning with the global hit How Long in the 70s with his then band, Ace. Carrack’s singing and compositions have earned him considerable success, both in-between and while performing with many others, including Nick Lowe, Squeeze, Roger Waters and, most famously, Mike and the Mechanics.

I Need You taken from his second solo album was a US Top 40 hit and subsequently covered by Aaron Neville and Linda Ronstadt. He contributed the vocal to Squeeze’s hit Tempted, sang Mike and the Mechanic’s first major hit Silent Running, had a US Top 10 hit with Don’t Shed a Tear from his One Good Reason solo album, sang much of Mike and the Mechanics second album, The Living Years, including the international hit title song. That band’s third album Word of Mouth included four Carrack compositions and the fourth included his co-composition hit with Rutherford, Over My Shoulder. Carrack has also released his seventh solo album, Satisfy My Soul, recorded entirely in his own studio and performed almost entirely by himself as well as a DVD entitled Paul Carrack in Concert.
