Design and high-tech for the cockpit: Sennheiser presents two new pilot’s headsets
25.10.2007 Wedemark

The new HMEC 250 and HME 95 headsets for private aircraft and business jets are now bringing exclusive design into the pilot’s cockpit. Both models offer optimum wearing comfort, are foldable and reliably protect the pilot against the damaging effects of volume peaks. The HMEC 250 also features a new TalkThrough function and NoiseGard™ 2.0 active noise compensation.

Discerning music lovers have always expected their home headphones to have an attractive and elegant design. Now, exclusive design is also being introduced into the cockpits of private aircraft — with the new HME 95 and HMEC 250 pilot’s headsets from Germany’s audio specialist Sennheiser. The active HMEC 250 and the passive HME 95 come in a very flat, ultra-light design that offers exceptional comfort even on the longest flights. “The ideal headset is one that pilots almost forget that they are wearing,” said Nicole Fresen, Product Manager Aviation at Sennheiser. “At the same time, it protects the pilot’s hearing and allows optimum communication in every situation.”

Hearing protection
The new headsets feature Peak Level Protection, which prevents the effects of harmful volume peaks. As soon as sound levels exceed 110 dB, the system intervenes to protect the pilot. The HMEC 250 is also equipped with NoiseGard, which actively reduces continuous low-frequency wind and engine noise by up to 25 dB. To ensure that pilots are still able to benefit from this additional comfort and safety when talking to their neighbours, the HMEC 250 features new TalkThrough technology. A pin-sized hole in the earpiece is the only indication of the internal condenser microphone and the sophisticated electronic circuitry that filters out the speaker’s voice from the other external noises and transmits it clearly — all at the touch of a button.

Comfort in the cockpit

Apart from their exceptionally light weight — without its cable, the HME 95 weighs a mere 275 grams and the HMEC 250 just 285 grams — both headsets have extra-soft ear pads and headband padding. The noise-compensating boom microphone can be rotated through 310°.

Their elegant black and silver finish and their sweeping curves make the new headsets real eye-catchers. A clever folding mechanism allows space-saving storage. “Until now, it has been almost impossible to find circumaural headsets that can be folded away,” said Product Manager Nicole Fresen. “Depending on how you want to store them, our new models can be either folded flat or made very compact.”
