Sennheiser joins stars in touching tribute to Leslie Cheung |
Numerous Hong Kong artistes and nearly 20,000 fans gathered at the Hong Kong Coliseum recently to pay tribute to acclaimed actor and musician Leslie Cheung. The two-night “Miss You Much, Leslie” concert tribute coincided with the fifth anniversary of the death of the prolific actor and singer-composer. Cheung died on 1 April, 2003 in Hong Kong, at the age of 46.

Supported by Sennheiser equipment, popular celebrities from the Hong Kong entertainment circle took to the stage each night, belting out Cheung’s evergreen hits as well as specially penned song tributes. Amongst the star-studded line-up were Jacky Cheung, one of the famed Four Heavenly Kings and an artistic consultant for the show, Andy Hui, Gigi Leung, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Karen Mok, William So and the pop trio Grasshoppers.
Mike Wong, monitor engineer for the two-night concert tribute |
According to Mike Wong, monitor engineer for Miss You Much, Leslie, the expectations for this show were “very high” and there was no room for anything less than perfect. “Not only was it an occasion to remember the beloved Leslie, the performers were all stars in their own right. Each artiste had his or her own preferences and that put extra demands on the audio quality,” noted Wong.
The veteran of 20 years did not have much to worry, however, there was no record of any interference noise during both nights. “I’ve always felt that the audio quality of the EK 300 IEM G2 monitoring receiver is very natural and isolation of any instrument is well-defined, said Wong. “But during the show even some of the artistes noticed it and complimented me on the clarity.” |
Daniel Kwan, front-of-house engineer for the Miss You Much, Leslie concert which drew 20,000 fans to the Hong Kong Coliseum |
Daniel Kwan, front-of-house engineer for Miss You Much, Leslie, was especially pleased with the new Sennheiser dynamic capsule MD 5235, which was paired with the SKM 5200 for rock and fast segments. “The MD 5235 handles high-pitched vocals and rock music well and is flexible enough for me to experiment for creativity,” he said. “As for the KK 105 which I’ve used for several years now, it provides an outstanding level of clarity and was a natural choice for the slow numbers. The cardioid dynamic e 904 gave a warm and full-bodied low end on the toms — I did not even have to do much EQ for those drums,” added Kwan.
Other than the equipment mentioned, Sennheiser also provided EM 550 G2 twin receivers, SKM 935 G2 handheld transmitters, EW 300 IEM G2 wireless monitors, and wired microphones e 935 and MD 421. |
